Friends of The Moshassuck has been organizing an autumn hike within the watershed every year. This year, the Lime Kiln Preserve hike took us north to the Manton Reservoir where the dam is being lowered to reduce the risk of flooding to homesteads that live within reach of the dam.
We began at the parking lot on the north side of Wilbur Road in Lincoln. The trail heads up north around the Manton Reservoir. As the soil is affected by the limerock in the area, we were treated to a variety of flora not commonly mixed in Rhode Island.
The water level has been significantly reduced in the Manton Reservoir as they work on the dam. As a result, we saw lakeshore that hadn't been seen since 1890, including stumps in the lake from the era of first dam installation.
